羅紹綺/Lo Shao-Chi: Creative Contemporary Tenmoku Artist

By

It is my artistic belief that “soil” is the representation of life and growth. “Ash” is the representation of death. All livings things must once more return to Mother Earth. It is a cycle of interdependence.

Said Artist Lo Shao-Chi

Who is Artist Lo Shao-Chi (羅紹綺)?

Artist Lo Chao-chi is a well-known Contemporary Tenmoku Pottery Artist from Taiwan. Many of his artwork pieces had been collected in many art museum and presented in art exhibitions inside and outside Taiwan. His creative pieces was mostly produced from local ashes that he collected from farming waste, farm rocks and soil. He brought all of these to create ash glaze and slurry glaze. Therefore, how was his ideas came from?

Regardless of design, application, or firing process, all are inseparable from the application of plant ash glazes and slurry glazes. The thoughts and inspiration throughout the creative process, the tempo, and expression of life are also connected to ash glaze and slurry glaze.

The poignant and serene qualities of clay were introduced by Professor Lo Sen-hao (羅森豪) at National Taipei University of Education. Professor Lo Sen-hao (羅森豪) inspired him to explore and discover the local sourcing of materials and additionally search for his personal narrative. Due to the insistence of his professor and chance encounters, he forged a bond with French-influenced pottery glaze and fabrication.

Plant-ash glaze and slurry glazes are the most significant characteristics of ancient eastern glaze. These glazes are exquisite and capable of displaying various changes when melted. The texture of the glaze is rich, elegant, and warm, irreplaceable by modern ore glaze.

Said Artist Lo Shao-Chi

The encouragement from his professor, his deep research into his local ash, soil and rock and following ancient methods , Artist Lo collected local ashes from farming waste and farmland rocks and soil to create ash glaze and slurry glaze, to act as an outer coating for his art pieces.

“It is my artistic belief that “soil” is the representation of life and growth. “Ash” is the representation of death. All livings things must once more return to Mother Earth. It is a cycle of interdependence.” Said Artist Lo Shao-Chi.

Winter Snow/ 冬雪 (TeaTimeGuy’s Collection)

“Winter Snow” was created in 2010. It represents the memory of my trip to France twelve years ago. That trip laid the foundation and direction for my future creations and endeavors. When I think back to my late night winter walks, I recall the white snowflakes floating down in the glistening silver starlight of the black winter night, guiding me. This work is a reflection of a French couple who helped me rediscover my passion for pottery art at a time when I was lost. They taught me about the philosophy of life and an outlook on how to approach life and creativity.
