What is Jian Zhan (建盏)?

建盏

JianZhan is one of my favorite tea wares, they are not only very gorgeous, but they are also hiding some story and mystery identity behind them.

In this blog, I would like to take you to the world of JianZhan, demonstrate on “brief background of Jianware”. I promise to bring you with more content in the next blog on “How Jianzhan are made” and “The Reasons why I really love this kind Piece of art so much”.

JianZhan Background

建盏 or JianZhan refer to Tea Bowl or Cup that originally found in Tang and Song Dynasty which specialize use to make in the DianCha ceremony (点茶道) in Song Dynasty. Jianzhan has also known as Tenmoku and Jianware as well,  they are produced in JianYang district (建阳区),Northern part of Fujian Province(闽北), China.

Jianzhan is known as a black porcelain and this black porcelain is one of 8 famous types porcelain manufacture in China. Jianware has been in production since the Tang and Song dynasties (more than 1,000 years ago) and was mainly used during the Song Dynasty in Dian Cha Ceremony.  Jianware is not only an amazing teaware, but it is also a special piece of art. it comes with different shapes and Glaze, such as oil spots(油滴), Hare’s hair(兔毫, YaoBian (曜变), etc.

Beside from that, there are many other characteristics such as making the taste more lively due to various minerals, especially iron ore, which makes the tea in JianZhan more lively and promotes better taste. Jianzhan have many other special features that I will be mention later on with up coming articles.

Thank you very much for reading. Hope you have an amazing day:)
